BACK TO SELECTED WORKS

In a standard turn-of-the-centrury California subdivision on the slops of Pacific Beach there is a unique home that expresses the waves of the ocean. This is the home of a surfboard builder, and it fits the circumstances of the lot which slopes upwards to the back. Other features, different from the neighborhood, are that this home is set farther in from the side-lines allowing ample room for usion exterior patios related to each interior space. The second story in back is the master bedroom with a view to the ocean. The owner was also the builder. The inside-outside garden walls are of hand-made brick, made the old fashion way, from adjacent Mexico. The house is essentially wood with curved laminated wood beams supported by vertical cantilevered poles. This is for seismic reasons, and allows total flexibility in locating windows and walls. As in all of Kellogg's work the idea is to eliminate both psychological and physical contrictions caused by the all-too-common box.
